THE LOMA AS A CAMP SITE
Local Mapuche tradition counsels making a pause before entering the mountains, in order to show respect for the beings that
inhabit them. The Loma is an ideal place to do this, as it is a natural portal to the Cañi mountain range.
The act of walking up to reach it is a transition, between the denser energy of the valley with its traffic and the clearer energy
of the mountains. The senses open up to the beauty of these spaces of ancestral power, bird song and crystal streams.
A wellspring of energy and clarity of mother nature, the Loma is truly a refuge of tranquility and connectedness - yet on
the other hand, still close to many hotsprings and all the tourist activity of Pucón.
THE LOMA AS A SPIRITUAL RETREAT
THE LOMA – Is located on the tourist trail from Pichares to the Cañi Sanctuary (20 km East of Pucón). As well as
being an authorised camp site it's also a genuine spiritual retreat. Situated on an old indigenous settlement, it was
specially designed to facilitate experiences of re-connection with the Earth. Rod Walker, pioneer in deeper ecological
education, felt the call of the Cañi Range's inspiration in 1993. Founder and head of CEAL Outdoor Education Centre and
Fellow of Ashoka Social Innovators, Walker directed the original training courses of the Cañi project for local rural
development - an undertaking that was novel at the time, now widely copied and applied in the ecotourism industry.
PURPOSE - Everything on the Loma follows the original idea of receiving groups of people with a maximum of simplicity
and minimum of impact on the place. Everything is rustic, small scale and low profile, yet easily houses 12 people
in a hut dormitory and more than double that when the campsite facilities are used.
LOCATION - It's the ideal place for any experience that needs an atmosphere of serenity - a useful characteristic as
ever more visitors to Pucón remark, 'ATHER eARTHll beautiful, but where's the peace and quiet?' On the Loma rest and
relaxation come naturally, well-connected to the peace of mother Earth.
CAÑI SANCTUARY– From the Loma, the walk up to the breathtaking Cañi Sanctuary is reduced by 25% in distance (2km) and
200 metres in vertical height gain. This allows considerably more time to enjoy being in the forest.
GROUP EXPERIENCES –
The Loma is highly suitable for workshops and group experiences such as adventure training, environmental
interpretation and specialized courses for universities, NGO's, state or commercial enterprises. It's also worth noting
another trend emerging with increasing frequency and strength - Earth-based self-development, energy healing and
SPIRITUAL PRACTICES –
There is a steady increase in demand for retreat experiences of Earth-based meditation, initiation and treatment with energy
healing such as Reiki and similar methods. Four years ago wecreated a labyrinth terrace, to provide a space for walking
meditation (often barefoot). Thereisalso a Tibetan Buddhist Stupa an hour's walk away over the open hillside in
INFRASTRUCTURE – The Loma property is 6,000 m2 in extent, divided in two halves, one active and one quiet. There are
three huts (110 m2 in total), a large multi-use barn with basic Kitchen for wet weather (total 110 m2), 4 bathrooms with
water (2 rustic, 2 more modern), and another 70 m2 of roofed spaces such as workshop, store etc. There are 12 flat tent
spaces and a small
low-level ropes course for team work. The site is set in native woodland watered by rushing streams - surroundings ideal
for deepening Earth education on mountains crowned by the extraordinary Cañi Sanctuary on the nearby summits.
ACCESS – The Loma is easily accessible from Santiago thanks to excellent inter-city bus services. Despite being
located between roaring streams and mountain forests, it´s only a 20 minute walk to the paved road and a regular bus service
to and from Pucón. The steep road up to the Loma is negotiable year-round by 4x4.
LABYRINTH - WALKING MEDITATION
The labyrinth, a mandala circle 12 m wide, contains one defined route to and from the sacred centre, where spiritual messages
, questions or thanksgiving can be offered, depending on the circumstances being processed by each person. As well as a true
space of transformative connection with Earth and one's inner essence, the circle provides a walking meditation of some
300 metres in total, and is often used for simply sitting out at night.
BUDDHIST STUPA AT 'CHAMSPA LING'
Three kilometers East of the Loma, in 2000 a Tibetan Buddhist Stupa was built in neighbouring Huepil, less than an hour's
walk away.Set among green hills and fertile fields, the place was named Chamspa Ling (place of peace) to remember the
spiritual work of its builder, Ven. Lama Chamspa Rinpoché. The stupa was inaugurated by the leader of Drikung Kagyu,
one of Buddhism's four branches, H H Drubpon Chetsang Rinpoché, as a culmination of ten years of teachings and
practice in the area.
